TIME IS EQUALLY REAL
A group exhibition with artists Jenna Palermo, Sandra Theoharatos, and Brigid Weiner.

This exhibition celebrates the Senior Thesis work by Southern Connecticut State University ART 420 Advanced Portfolio Students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jenna Palermo, Sandra Theoharatos, and Brigid Weiner presented their thesis publicly live on Instagram on May 7th, 2020. We hope to see their work in person at the SCSU Art Gallery sometime in the 2020 - 2021 academic year alongside all the talented graduating Studio Art majors.

Painting with a distorted perspective, I am able to bring the viewer into someone else’s life. By working this way, I evoke empathy to lessen stigmas that society has created. Many times people wish to keep their distance from these issues, because they aren’t appropriate or they don’t affect them directly. However, by painting psychological themes, I force the viewer into accepting a reality that isn’t necessarily their own. This creates an intersection between alienation and universality, as it pertains to human existence.

Anomalies and glitches go hand in hand. Both are unexpected deviations in the system. Anything anomalic is a glitch, anything that is a glitch is an anomaly. The world was a glitch in the solar system, and life happened someway and somehow, because of an anomaly. Something went the way it shouldn’t have. Reality these days feels as if it was conjured up in a simulation, and we are just navigating each obstacle as best that we can, whilst exclaiming, “What the hell is going on?” I explore these moments of bewilderment and shock. My work reflects quite literally the glitch effect, but also the emotional realization that this is not what we envisioned the future to be.

Through this series one can create a deeper connection to the never-ending metamorphosis in our lives. As someone who takes a deep interest in symbolism, I decided to focus on symbols of change and growth that one could easily identify, but also resonate with. Within this series, I chose specific living and non-living subjects that hold meaning to me and in turn may bring meaning to others. Symbolism holds much value with many religions and cultures. For many symbols are a form of connection to the people and places around them and because of this the lack of symbolism would cause many to not be able to find purpose within their life. So, for this series, I focused on oil paint as my medium and chose to layer many of my subjects to create depth within the pieces and to convey the never-ending change that takes place within our lives.
